Long before it held books, the building on this corner was the town's spring house — the covered structure that kept the water source clean and accessible. When the library needed a permanent home in the 1920s, the town simply built around it instead of tearing it down.
The original stone basin is still there, under glass, in the reading room we now call the Spring Room. It's usually the quietest seat in the building.
